Cats vs. Dogs: The Preferred Pet

Are you an aspiring pet parent but contemplating whether to go for a cat or a dog? Well, you’re not alone! Most of the pet parents might have gone through this dilemma before adopting their babies. However, it is not easy to determine which animal makes a better pet. Therefore, let us have a look at a few differences between a cat and a dog to come to a conclusion.

•Space

Cats require less space while dogs need a lot more freedom. If you live in a small apartment, adopting a cat can be a good idea. But, if you live in a spacious home, you can consider adopting a dog. However, you should remember that while cats do not mind staying alone, dogs crave company. Therefore if you have a tight schedule and stay away from home for long, a cat might be a better companion for you.

•Priorities

Kittens are overall pretty low maintenance when compared to puppies. Once the weaning period is over, you can leave a kitten unsupervised at home. Once they are toilet trained, they are more than happy to stay at home. Puppies, on the other hand, can get quite mischievous if left unsupervised. They are capable of creating a ruckus if left alone at home.

•Usefulness

Cats are known for their hunting instincts and are experts at keeping pests away. Dogs on the other hand drive away strangers. They have a natural protective instinct and there are a number of instances of famous dogs who are well-known for their bravery. While a pet parent might not make a choice based on the pet’s usefulness, it is always good to be aware of their natural instincts.

•Maintenance

According to reports, cats spend 50% of their time in grooming. They can often be seen licking themselves. They do this in order to clean away food particles that can draw the attention of predators or other animals. Dogs, on the other hand, have poor hygiene. Therefore, it is necessary to bathe them often. However, most dogs do not like being wet, and bathing them can turn into a nightmare for both the parent and the pet.

•Presence

Cats are quiet creatures, whereas dogs like being noisy. If you are the kind of person who loves lively company, dogs can be your perfect companion. Dogs are dynamic animals who voice their opinions in the form of joyful barks and angry growls. Some dogs also tend to bark at strangers and guests. Cats on the other hand are calm creatures and only express themselves through soft purrs or alarming meows. Therefore, if you prefer peaceful surroundings, cats can be your perfect companion.

Ending Note

Having discussed the behavioral patterns of both animals, we also have to keep in mind that all of them are generalities that might not apply to individual pets. Factors including genetics, breed, and history play an important part in how friendly, teachable, and sociable they will be. Irrespective of which side you are on the cat vs. dog debate, you should research about your choice of pet before adopting one. You can also spend some time at an animal shelter to figure out further.
